Lp(a) Test (Lipoprotein a)
The inherited heart risk most people never get tested for. Once in a lifetime.
Roughly one in five people carries elevated Lp(a), it is set by genetics, and almost nobody gets tested for it. It does not move much with diet or exercise, which is precisely why knowing early matters: it changes how aggressively you and your doctor manage everything else.
What it tells you: whether you carry an inherited risk factor for early heart disease and stroke that a standard cholesterol panel cannot see. Because the level is largely genetic and stable, most people only need this test once.
Who orders it: anyone with a parent or sibling who had a heart attack or stroke young, people with heart disease and "normal" cholesterol, and anyone whose cardiologist mentioned Lp(a) but did not order it.
